Halloween Costumes: Gay Icons Edition

Halloween Costumes: Gay Icons Edition

It’s almost Halloween, AKA gay Christmas! If you haven’t already planned what you’re going to wear months in advance, here are some costume ideas for some of the most iconic characters and figures in the queer community…

1. HIM from Power Puff Girls

There’s a reason so many queer people relate to cartoon villains; they all have great outfits and they’re all queer coded. Is it okay that most of the queer representation in cartoons from the 90s and 2000s were evil villains? Probably not… But who wouldn’t want to dress up as an evil gay lobster?

Freddie Mercury

2. Freddie Mercury (in the iconic I Want to Break Free music video)

We all love bi-icon and Queen frontman Freddie Mercury but the basic jeans and white tank top costume has been done way too many times. Freddie was a man of many looks, and one of my favourites is his housewife look from the I Want to Break Free music video. 1970s queer icon + drag? What could be better?

3. Frank-N-Furter from The Rocky Horror Picture Show

I couldn’t make a list of iconic queer costumes and not include at least one character from the cult-classic Rocky Horror. I suggest adding a green lab coat to your costume if you want to be sexy, but still sensible in the chilly October weather.

RuPaul

4. RuPaul Charles – RuPaul’s Drag Race

Who’s a bigger gay icon than the legendary RuPaul? Find a colourful suit, a bald cap (or fully commit and just rock the bald look for a while), and then pair your costume with accessories that reference some of Ru’s favourite things like an Emmy award or some pro-fracking merch!

Megan Fox Jennifer's Body

5. Megan Fox in Jennifer’s Body

Originally marketed to straight college dudes, Jennifer’s Body has become an LGBT cinematic classic! If you’re willing to commit to low-rise jeans for a night, this is a pretty easy costume to pull off on short notice.

6. Lil Nas X in Montero (Call Me By Your Name)

Slutty demon or Lil Nas X? Hopefully your Halloween party has enough gay people in attendance that everyone gets the reference. But even if no one does get it, you’ll still look hot, and honestly isn’t that half the point of Halloween?

7. Elvira – Mistress of the Dark

Let’s go lesbians, let’s go! Celebrate the mistress of the dark joining the alphabet mafia and pay homage to her by putting on a black dress and teasing your hair until it’s sky-high.

8. Frank Ocean at the 2021 Met Gala

I honestly don’t have a joke to make here, I just really love the green baby and want to see someone recreate this look.

9. Frog and Toad

What could be more cottagecore than going as Frog and Toad for Halloween? Grab a friend or your partner and recreate the iconic pair! If you’re really committed to the bit show up to your Halloween party on a tandem bike just to really get the point across.

10. Mr. Smithers – The Simpsons

This one is for all my comfy and practical gays who are just out to have a good time and don’t want to be too extra. And bonus, all of these outfit pieces can probably be found in most lesbians’ wardrobes.
